It is as if our Holy Father is at the keyboard readying to play something beautiful. Viva!

The website is a disappointment to me. I sent an e-mail to their contact address to note the following:
# Uncommon requirement of Microsoft Silverlight for Vatican radio. Unlike Flash, this is generally NOT installed in most environments and simply unavailable in many others. I use Linux for example, Microsoft will say it is available but if you test it you will find it crashes on your website.
# Flash page banner rotates between blue and white blank areas on Google Chrome running on Linux. Flash page banner is solid blue under Firefox on Windows XP. There appears to be little cross-browser / cross-platform testing. Virtually all other major websites do not exhibit these problems.
# The color scheme is simply unattractive. The shades of blue and yellows clash.
# Excessive use of all capital letters makes reading difficult.
# The website loads slow and scrolls slow.
Of course, my e-mail to the published address (info@news.va) was rejected with the message “Illegal host/domain name found”.
@ George @ Convert Journal: Being a Linux user/admin myself, I know your frustrations with cross compatibility. I recommend on working to find a Silverlight fix or workaround for the site, as I’m sure finding a solution for Linux users will not be on the site admins’ top priority. Otherwise, there may be another link at which you can listen to Vatican Radio.
I agree that there are elements on the page which are hard to read. Given time, this should get sorted out. All in all, this is the beginning of a good thing.
Along with the sedia gestatoria and the Papal Tiara, I would like to see the Holy Father resume the use of the “Apostolic We”. So, the tweet would read:

Seeing the Holy Father using an iPad makes me smile (says I while typing on my iPad).
I’m surprised that every news account I’ve read about this doesn’t think to include the Pope’s account listing. He’s @PopeBenedictXIV if anyone wants to follow. :)

He has! In Summorum Pontificum, for example. He addresses the reasons of why he uses the royal “we” vs. “I” in the book, “Light of the World”.
George, as somebody who dislikes Adobe more than Microsoft, the suggestion to use flash seems like a non-solution! :-) However, what I really wanted to ask you about was the bounced email error message. Where was it from? It is obviously wrong:
raphaelmx[1-2] have addresses 212.77.5.1[1-2]; raphaelmx3 (which smells strongly of a spam trap) has address 212.77.4.113. If the bounce message was from mx3 because 1 and 2 were overloaded, it makes sense. Otherwise, it’s not only a lie, but a mistake!
BTW, kudos to their hostmaster: excellent mail server names!
@Geoffrey: You’re right, he has, but inconsistently, and maybe tweeting the “Royal We” would be asking too much!
Vox & Geoffrey, I think HH’s use of the royal we is more logical and effective that the more traditional promiscuous use of it. On 7/7/7 it was particularly striking to note the contrast between the first person singular in the accompanying letter to the bishops and the first person plural in the Motu Proprio itself. The change from “I remember” to “We decree” seems to add an extra emphasis to the latter.

Do you know if the Holy Father actually surfs the net? Just curious as to how tech savy he is at his age. It would be interesting to know if he actually reads your blog? Do you have any information on this? Does he have blogs and news sites that he visits or reads daily, or is he still using the old news print? Thought you might know?

@Jim – I would gather from the rather hesitant way in which he approached actually touching the iPad that he doesn’t spend much (if any) time on the internet. In fact, if memory serves, he writes everything by hand and has someone else do all the typing.
As to the video, I thought it was really cool that he was at least minimally hands on with the new site and the tweet. When I first read the article, I was thinking “yeah, like he actually did that” and was pleasantly surprised when I saw the video.

I agree it looks like our Holy Father is approaching the iPad with a little diffidence, as though it’s a possibly tetchy cat that he doesn’t know well. My dad, who is more or less his contemporary (87 this October) has the exact same approach to computers (never mind the iPad which I don’t think he’s ever seen let alone used).
But kudos to HH for showing game and actually scrolling and navigating a bit.
I was surprised and pleased that this event was covered on the NBC Nightly News yesterday in a very upbeat manner, wherin Brian Williams read the words of the tweet. I don’t recall the last time I heard the holy name of Jesus Christ mentioned on the network news.
Though I’m a newbie in the ‘techie world’ (I have only a laptop, a cellphone and now a digital camera), I think it’s very cool that the Holy Father has embraced this new frontier of the digital divide!
In the second video, I saw on the IPad a photo of him and his brother Monsignor Georg when they were young priests….Happy 60th Anniversary of Ordination, Holy Papa Benedict and Monsignor Georg!

Above I noted some of my personal observations on News.va, including my frustration in reaching the News.va team at their official e-mail address.
This afternoon I received a message from them (via my blog) that the problem has been fixed. I am impressed! I only commented here, so this is where they learned of the problem. They fixed it promptly *and* made the effort to find a way to respond to me. I am encouraged and take this as a very good sign of the commitment to this effort.
