Great photos of Card. Burke’s Mass at Fontgombault

NLM has some spiffing eye-candy photos of Holy Mass celebrated by His Eminence Raymond Card. Burke in the beautiful medieval church at the French monastery of Fontgombault.  There are beautiful vestments as well.

And yes, there is a cappa magna.

What a truly exemplary Prince of the Church!

In the 70s I used to visit Fontgombault regularly with my (now late) father. This was mostly in the days of Abbot Dom Roy. They were threatened with nothing less than dissolution by Bugnini and his ilk if they would not change to the new Mass. Eventually, after correspondence, meetings etc Dom Roy acceded, but only if Latin Missals could be provided. There were none in print – it took a full year to have them specially printed at enormous cost!

A little later, Ecclesia Dei commission came into being and the old liturgy was restored in a slightly modified form. But even in the dark days before that, private Masses continued to be said in the old rite.

Fontgombault is one of the great jewels of France. The old church is in fact a rebuild of ruins dating back to the 12th century. They constantly struggle to accommodate the ever-growing novitiate and have founded several priories – Clear Creek being the one best known in the US. That has also attracted many novices from day 1. I wonder why… !

The light! My goodness gracious, the light!

  4. Burke for pope, anyone? I love seeing that cappa magna.

  5. I mean next pope, naturally.

Was it the Missal of ’62?
    Beautiful images!

Do you think His Eminence uses the Cappa the most out of the rest of the Cardinals? If I had a nickel for every time Cardinal Burke wore the glorious cappa magna.

  8. Catholic87 says:

    Also, Cardinal Burke for pope!

  9. MJ says:

    Ya! Love the cappa magna.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what good men look like. If I put my nose to the screen can I smell the incense?!?

  11. Maltese says:

Interesting that Cardinal Burke would focus-in on Fontgombault; this is ground-zero regarding Tradition. They are the only French monastic order which didn’t capitulate to the Novus Ordo after Vatican II, and still remain regularized with the Vatican.

    Very interesting.

Thanks. yes great photos, and the beautiful ‘noble simplicity’ of the vestments and abbatial church.

I always have a nigling doubt about whether the use of the cappa magna advances the cause of tradition or provides simply an easy roadblock for accusations of triumphalism (there is evidence of that in reporting in Catholic media eg when the Cardinal visited Australia) rather than being a magnet to draw others to tradition. Perhaps I see it as “we’ve got a beautiful dessert, do we really need the big cherry on top?”

However we can’t not do (good) things because we fear someone will criticise.

Those who have no appreciation for royalty, pomp and grandour would hold that position.

I am glad to see the cappa. Bring back the papal tierra, the sedia, the Papal court. I want it all back. I am so sick of the PC, everyones equal lies.

    thanks for the treat–wow

  15. robtbrown says:

    Maltese,

Fontgombault is not a religious order.

  16. robtbrown says:

    asperges,

Are you a Brit? I met a father and son at Fontgombault in the 70’s. They had also visited Randol.

  17. Maltese says:

robtbrown: Fontgombault is not a religious order.

    Very true…my bad.

    ‘Eye-candy’ indeed!
And yes, His Eminence Cardinal Burke for the ‘next’ Pope!
And I’m with you, moon1234-I’m sick of the PC garbage, too!
