Meanwhile,…

White to move.

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.

Meanwhile, in Pro Chess League action yesterday, there was a back and forth between young Yip of the Passers and mighty Magnus of the Chessbrahs. During the commentary by Tanya and Danya… no, really! … there was a great image from Tal and also an infamous arithmetical point of contention.

Here’s a snip.

You must take your opponent into a deep, dark forest where 2+2=5 and the path leading out is only wide enough for one.”

– Mikhail Tal.

Please remember me when shopping online. Thanks in advance. Today the Gotham Knights struggle against the Shanghai Tigers and the Blitz is lined up with the Croatia Buldogs.

    1. Bxc4 Rxd1+
    2. Rxd1 Bxc4
    3. Rd8+ Kg7
    4. Rc8 wins one of the bishops and white should prevail

  2. WVC says:

I thought it was xc4 – if black answers with the bishop xc4 or xb1, white responds with xd8+

Trickier is if black answers with Rxd1+, because then if white responds with Rxd1 black is open to Bxc4 – at which point white doesn’t really win in the exchange. It does at least save the Rook on b1 from being lost, so it turns a potential lopsided exchange into an even exchange.

That’s all I could come up with.

    1. Bh6 ?threatening Rxd8#)
    If … Rxd1+
    2. Rxd1 maybe some futile interposition such as B-e4, N-e6 and/or B-e5, but ultimately R-e8#
    If … N-e6
    2. Rxe6 Rxe6
    3. R-b8+ R-e8
    4. R×e8#
    Likewise if
    2. …… B-e4 (note that Black never had a chance to move Bxb1 because of the continuing mating threat on the e-file.)

  4. My take.

    White to move.

    1. Bxc4 Bxc4
    2. Rxd8+

    1. Bxc4 Bxb1
    2. Rxd8+

    But…!

    1. Bxc4 Rxb1+
    2. Rxd1 Bxc4
    3. Rd8+ Kg7
    4. Rc8

  5. WVC says:

Ah – I didn’t keep going with the Rc8. I see it now.

Also, I think a typo in the third sequence.

[Sorry about the typos in any of the comments. Sometime I make them pretty fast. I’ve gained a lot of respect for those who write (and edit) chess books and articles. It’s painstaking. The other day I was at the car dealership for my annual checks… (se what I did there?) and I brought a book on opening blunders with a small travel set. One of the games was NOT working, so I found the game online and got the real moves. Also, one of the guys who worked there said that if he could beat me I’d have to buy a car. I did wind out playing another employee – both of them young guys who were just recently into the game like so many others online. Other people waiting for their cars to be done were watching. Predictable. The great thing is that NO ONE WAS LOOKING AT THE TV OR THEIR PHONES. That in itself is a recommendation for EVERYONE here to learn and to teach their children. Yes, I won.]

    THAT sanctuary took some doing!
..Granted, most of the good ones do. Still, it’s not everyday I mis-take something for part of a pipe organ. …Too bad it’s not. (Yeah, I’m a music nut.)
…Someday, when I’m rich and not famous, I need to see this place. ..Where is it?

    @jflare29
It’s St John Lateran. The Chair (of St Peter) is in the area behind that beautiful altar.
