Remember Casey Stengle’s advice: never make predictions, especially about the future. Things can change rapidly and unexpectedly. The Cardinals who elected Francis were appointed by John Paul and Benedict. The Cardinals appointed by Francis may look for someone very different when the time comes to choose his successor, however much they tow the party line now.

  2. Crysanthmom says:

??. Happy New Year Father! ? Thanks for all you do.

  3. JabbaPapa says:

I hope your 1) is right ; but I doubt that your 3) is.

Whatever else, the overall stalemate that characterised most of 2023 has ended. And Ukraine is running very short of men and munitions.

  4. Shonkin says:

About the COVID prediction: In early October my wife and I came down with a very odd cold. It wasn’t severe, just odd: a couple of days of muscle aches and fatigue, then a week or so of chest cold, followed by lingering slight head cold symptoms. There was no fever at all.
I had my annual physical in November. I mentioned the cold to my doctor, because I hadn’t had a cold of any kind in a year and a half before that.
He told me it was probably COVID.
In other words, the current COVID variant was not in the least serious, at least not for healthy 77-year-olds.

  5. tzabiega says:

Number 2 will not come true because Israel will be left with only the nationalist PLO which supports minority Christian rights which goes against Israeli propaganda that Palestinians are fanatics (that is why Israel funded Hamas against the PLO for decades before realizing they created a monster). Without crazy Hamas Israel may have to allow for Palestinian independence and that will definitely not happen.

  6. ThePapalCount says:

i am earnestly prayng for Number 10 to come to pass…. somehow… someway
well… in any event there is always 2025.
Happy New Year Father. God bless your good work.

  7. Dustin F, OCDS says:

Let’s not be too pessimistic about no. 10, Fr. I have a feeling maybe this year is your year.

  8. Dustin: maybe this year is your year.

LOL! Yeah, maybe. However, since there aren’t a lot of people who have pull who can recommend me, there would have to be a huge popular movement. But even that, in these days…. Perhaps if they elect my mother as the next Pope?

  9. UnwaffledAnglican says:

The only one I can quibble with is #3, as I suspect that the Russians will gain the upper hand. war may not be over, but it will resemble 1945 more than 1943.

  10. ThePapalCount says:

Father, reference to your response to Dunstan…..
Dustin: maybe this year is your year.

LOL! Yeah, maybe. However, since there aren’t a lot of people who have pull who can recommend me, there would have to be a huge popular movement. But even that, in these days…. Perhaps if they elect my mother as the next Pope?

Father Z, at this point I would be happy to see your mother appear om the loggia of St Peter’s…

  11. Gladiator says:

I predict a conclave that totally rejects everything since the abdication.

  12. Not says:

I agree with all except 10. Monsignor Zulsdorf. Has a nice ring to it

  13. Peetem says:

I know that #7 is coming up, but have two thoughts:

    1) What problem are they trying to solve? Faithful weekly-mass-attending Catholic’s don’t need renewing. We love the Eucharist!
    2) If the Bishops are trying to get more people to attend mass, simply make it much more traditional, even if Novus Order. But if they continue to allow mass in many places to look like an Episcopal service, folks will just go to the Episcopal church….and with much less guilt as “everything goes” (or seems too anyway) in that denomination.

  14. Charivari Rob says:

    1. Far closer to possible at this point than should be in a sane world, but then… it’s not quite a sane world.
    2. Hamas won’t be destroyed in Gaza. Mostly incapacitated for a while with respect to arms stocks & cannon fodder, perhaps. Leadership is hunkered somewhere deep or offshore, will trickle back in. All the while, relief supplies will be skimmed.
    3. Continue with no results? Freedom for Ukraine, an embarrassment for Putin, and a buffer for NATO are three decent ongoing results. Would be nice if Russia was ready to negotiate some face-saving return to their own borders, yes, but current state of affairs is better than any other likely result.

    7. Eucharistic Revival fizzle? I don’t think so. I’ve seen a slow, quiet climb – don’t think it will fall back to “before” levels.

  15. Liam says:

    11) The canonical status of the SSPX will not be regularized.

  16. BeatifyStickler says:

I predict Malcolm Ranjith will be elected Pope. Ed Pentin will have played a part in that. Burke will be an earpiece to Ranjith and Burke will recommend Fr.Z to be made a Bishop.

    [QUOD DEUS AVERTAT!]

  17. Lurker 59 says:

    1) The election will be contested to the point that the winner will not be known until 2025. Trump will not have the popular vote (same as 2016) and the Electoral College vote will be deeply fractious. Trump will have the Electoral College depending on what is ruled constitutional. Trump will not be on the ballot in several states that would have gone blue anyway. There is a high likelihood of him not being on the ballot in a few purple states, and perhaps a red state like Georga but will win several of these states via write-in. This will be the cause of the Electoral College issues with competing slates of electors.
    2) Israel will continue to attempt to destroy Hamas by the removal of all Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank. The destruction of the Palestinian peoples will result in the destruction of Israel. This is the calculus by Hamas — martyrdom to remove Israel. Israel will attempt multiple gambits to find a path out of this, but will in the long run, fail.
    3) Ukrainians will continue to be fed to the meat grinder. Opportunities for peace will not be sought by the Ukrainians and Russia will continue to pursue incremental advancement rather than decisive victory. NATO/US will continue the proxy war and waste trillions of dollars. Russia’s economy and industry will continue to grow.
    4) DDF will issue many word-salads that are self-referential to this pontificate. There will be at least one clearly heretical document pertaining to either ecclesiology or the nature of grace.
    5) The ITC will write about the feminine character of the Church. It will be squishy. There will be consternation amongst progressives that Pope Francis is ignoring the plight of women.
    6) There will “not” be women deacons. However, groundwork will continue to be laid for their existence.
    7) The Eucharistic Renewal won’t even get off the ground. The USCCB will turn its collective gaze elsewhere and conflate Eucharistic Renewal with something on the environment/migration of peoples.
    8) The US border/immigration system will continue to be dismantled at the policy level.
    9) No one will care about the Chinese continuing to develop the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association as Church independent from Rome. At least once, Pope Francis will uphold it as a model of the Church’s future.
    10) Fr. Z will not be made a “Monsignor” but he will continue to be God’s instrument in saving souls.
    11) SSPX will consecrate new bishops and will be excommunicated for that.
    12) The African bishops will take a page from their African Anglican counterparts and lay the groundwork for establishing “flying bishops” in response to the growing schism over the normalization and blessing of homosexuals (etc.).
    13) There will be some official strike against the remainder of the Roman Apostolic Liturgy that still exists within the NO.
    14) Pope Francis will still be Pope in Dec 2024 and will continue to have an unexpectedly long reign. His physical sufferings will become more publically apparent along with his temper as his health declines.

  18. PostCatholic says:

I hope you’re not right about #1, and much depends on the trial before the US District Court for DC. As for the rest, I only have #10 to ask about – do want the pretty buttons, as they were called when I was still a Catholic? Or wouldn’t a substantive role be better than an honorary one? You have much to offer, I wish you a post in which you can give it full expression. Happy New Year to you.

  19. Post: Frankly, this doesn’t have to be an either/or preference. It can be both/and. However, the principle reason, and this is from the depths of my beady black heart, is that it would be a recognition of the important of online ministry. Mine, that of others, etc. The powers that be don’t understand it yet, even now. What they don’t understand they fear. It is extremely important.

  20. PostCatholic says:

I agree with that. May this year bring both substantive support and recognition.
