Prayer Before Using The Internet HERE
Almighty and eternal God, who created us in Thine image and bade us to seek after all that is good, true and beautiful, especially in the divine person of Thine Only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, grant, we beseech Thee, that, through the intercession of Saint Isidore, Bishop and Doctor, during our journeys through the internet we will direct our hands and eyes only to that which is pleasing to Thee and treat with charity and patience all those souls whom we encounter. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

I’m sure they thought they were getting it from Gamalielli’s.
Fr Z, A comment from a cradle Catholic who lapsed for 10 years during a dysfunctional marriage, came back through the Charismatic renewal and is now happily attending the TLM: the Chosen has deepened my faith and has made me a little evangelist. As I go about my daily life, often wearing my Chosen hoodie or a Chosen tee shirt, mostly non-church goers comment on the teal. When I ask if they like the show, they mostly respond that they never heard about it. One hardware store checker asked how it compared to Charleton Heston’s “Ten Commandments?” I said this was better. All glory be to God to be able to talk about Jesus in the public square. I now read my Bible more often. My prayer life is better. It saddens me that there are so many Catholic quibbles. It doesn’t surprise me that the superb costume and set designers would choose a fabric trim reminiscent of offerings at Gammarelli’s. The level of detail is amazing.
Enjoyable show? It’s been around a while now, I know.
Happy to see this subject Father. We used to occasionally enjoy the show, but accepting it as entertainment, not teaching. Our assistant Pastor, a few years ago, stated that viewing the show is at our peril, as he deemed it heretical. The part he cited was the Blessed Mother conversing about her childbirth, & the attendant pain.
That show was one (the only?) video presentations we watched, & enjoyed the subject matter, however inaccurate it may have been on occasion.
What say you? OK, ok w/reservations, or fuhgeddaboudit? Thanks!
Wouldn’t surprise me in the least. I saw a clip of the show that contained a clear anti-Catholic theological swipe, and that did it for me.
I found the first two seasons of The Chosen interesting, despite some heretical issues–I thought the depiction of Mary was very poor…she just seemed small (literally) and very mousy. They were probably trying to “humanize” her and/or watering down her importance to attract Protestants.
I slowly started to lose interest as the show evolved because they seemed to run out of story. I understand the title of the show is “The Chosen,” meaning the apostles, but as time went on, much of each show would be usually tedious dialogues about most unimportant stuff among the apostles, and then the last seven minutes of the show, Jesus would show up.
I thought the depiction of Jesus has been pretty good, trying to show he was fully human (playing games and not being very good), and the conversation with the woman at the well was one of the highlights of the long arc of the show.
Despite the somewhat watered down Catholic stuff, I think it shows that serious religious stories have an audience. They were clearly trying to appeal to a much broader audience than Catholics, and they seem to have succeeded.
The fact that The Chosen is being watched and promoted by Catholic parishes in their bulletins and Catholic organizations having discussion groups after each episode is the direct result V2’s unfortunate success of it’s novel teaching on ecumenism. In another age, this anti-Catholic show would have been denounced for its heresy and blasphemy at the highest levels of the Church and the laity would have had nothing to do with it. It glaringly blasphemes Our Lady which in itself should be a red flag as to the objectives of the writers. Not to mention writing in modern issues such as Matthew having Aspergers for no reason other than to make it more relatable to modern society ( this is by their own admission). In other words its fake, besides heretical and blasphemous. It seems Catholics want to use it to dialogue with the “separated brethren”, explain what Catholics believe and evangelize, but as the last 60 years have shown, this only results in the weakening of their Catholic Faith.
To understand The Chosen everyone should be aware of two very significant facts: First, The Chosen is the project of Dallas Jenkins who is an American evangelical Protestant whose father is one of the co-authors of the Left Behind series — think Scofield Bible with its Rapture and Zionist dispensationalism. Second, the Latter Day Saints have been significantly involved in the production of the series. Strange bed fellows, eh?
