If there is no delivery of the washer/drier today in the afternoon, it’ll have to wait until Tuesday. I don’t want it on a Sunday. The saga continues.
Yesterday I posted the post-mortem on a less than pleasing cheese and pickle sandwich.
That brings me to today’s Rome shot:

The product, set to go sale in UK supermarkets in September with a £2 price tag, contains “pasta in a creamy sauce with pancetta” and “no artificial colours”.

Italians on social media reacted with fury and disbelief to the news on Thursday, with many asking if it was a joke.
Other comments included “I wouldn’t even give it to stray cats” or “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do”.

In 2020 Romans reeled in horror at celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay’s “nightmare carbonara” while in 2021 The New York Times caused upset in Italy with its Smoky Tomato Carbonara.
[…]
Italy’s tourism minister has chimed in:
“Italian cuisine is a serious thing”, Santanchè wrote in a post on X, before paraphrasing the actor Alberto Sordi in the 1954 classic film Un americano a Roma to say that canned carbonara should be fed to rats.
I wonder if this isn’t a ploy of Bill Gates to push people willingly to eat crickets.
My suffering continues. I was trying to ignore this, but several friends insulted my phone by sending links. I confess: I shared it once. I won’t do it again…. No… wait. I guess I’m doing it now! See what happens when these improprieties are perpetrated?
Mala tempora currunt. Peiora parantur.
Perhaps I should make my own carbonara tonight in reparation for this vile offense against humanity. Alas, in a pinch I don’t think I can put my hands on real guanciale today.
HEY a*****.w****@erickson.com! My email thank you note was kicked back. New address?

Speaking of cheese and pickle sandwiches, and speaking about what I’ve been watching in the evening:
Still in the realm of Morse – and I do need to revive ZedNet – the younger version of the gal who played in The Queen’s Gambit appeared in an Episode of Endeavour which I just saw.

In chessy news, … that’s about all I have. The Queens Gambit was a series which helped fueled the chess explosion during COVID. This explosion, like the Big Bang, is still expanding outward with remarkable effect.
Meanwhile, from the other game God prefers….
In 1968, Bob Gibson was never removed for another pitcher. Not once, all year. Including the World Series, he made 37 starts. He completed 31 of them. The other six, he was removed for a pinch-hitter. pic.twitter.com/h4a7tw2EoK

White to move and mate in 2. (How long did it take you?)

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.
Please remember me when shopping online and use my affiliate links. US HERE – UK HERE WHY? This helps to pay for health insurance (massively hiked for this new year of surprises), utilities, groceries, etc.. At no extra cost, you provide help for which I am grateful.

I LOVE the Endeavor series and all the ones before that. The Brits know how to make good detective shows. My favorite of all time was the MI5 series, 10 of them, called “Spooks” by the Brits.
Absolutely love Endeavor. Lewis is also good too, but that pilot is usually separate like the Endeavor one from season 1
This involves a two-step: first free the line of attack for the Rook at f7, then apply check. It’s a bonus that the first step can also apply check:

Took less than a minute — thanks for the breather!
I seem to recall a trade in comestible rats on board in at least one O’Brian novel, and a stolen rat of Stephen Maturin’s which he let it be known no one should try eating as he’d been doing something mithradatic with it…
There was a time when I thought canned pasta was brilliant. That time was a half-century ago, in the previous millennium. I will never be in Rome, or anywhere near it, so I get my Italian food -fix in Butte, Montana, at a one-man restaurant called Mr. Hot Dogs.
Must be seen to be appreciated.
Glory to God!?
Wasn’t wild about Inspector Morse but loved Endevour. Great period piece, Morse singing in the Choir, His famous car. Free Masonry exposed.
As far as caned pasta…NO PROCESSED FOODS!

Solved in 4:50. Felt like a long time.
Lent in a can. Can’t wait to try it.
I liked Inspector Morse; haven’t watch Endeavor yet.
As to the chess problem—I am a little rusty so this problem took me extra time: a whole 20 seconds. :-)
Father, you wrote at the outset, “I don’t want it [a washing machine] on a Sunday.” In the 1950’s, I’m told that my convert-mother asked her Irish-born Priest if doing laundry is considered to be “work” so that it shouldn’t be done on Sunday. He said, “Do you put the clothes in the machine, put in some soap, and turn the machine on?”
“Yes.”
“You call that work?”
Gibson also had a 1.12 ERA for the year.
It’s good to have a change in pace once in a while from Spaghetti-Os.
Impresssive stat about Bob Gibson’s 1968 season, especially given that it is in addition to his having a 1.12 ERA that season.
L: on a Sunday
Not because I won’t do a load of laundry on a Sunday. With these machines, it is hardly work. I didn’t want it delivered on a Sunday.
True, Bob Gibson had a good year. But when the chips were down in 1968 series it was Mickey Lolich of the Detroit Tigers who won 3 complete games and shut Gibson and the Cardinals down with an 8-5 win in Game 7. Not likely we will ever see anybody win 3 complete games in the World Series in today’s era where managers change pitchers at the drop of a hat.
I have envisioned a “Sunday Mode” for online retailers like stoves will have a “Sabbath Mode” – give you the option to elect to have your shipment delayed so as not to be delivered (ideally, not transported) on Sunday. Amazon is pretty good about letting you push out a delivery date, but it can be really tough to avoid Sunday deliveries in other contexts.
Even among “committed” Christians/Catholics, a stricter Sunday observance (beyond just attending Church…) seems foreign. I work with some earnest Evangelicals who I routinely scold for working on Sunday. May God send a few unreconstructed ossified manualists for the Evangelicals, I suppose…
I miss the days when pitchers got pulled for pinch hitters.
