White to move and mate in 2.  No. REALLY.  Mate in 2.  Can you get this in under a minute?  It took me two.  Then I saw that I had it wrong.  Two more.  Got it.

  1. White to move and mate in 2.

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.

I played OTB yesterday. I wasn’t physically feeling great, but I played really well. I’m awful at blitz.

    Hmm.
The only thing I could come up with seems against the rules. If the white King moves into “check,” but the black Knight and Pawn are both pinned, unable to move, because it would expose the black King to checkmate, this would work.

But is it a legal move?

    Kh6?, Pf6
    Bg7#

  3. Michael in NoVA says:

    Amenamen,

That doesn’t work. Just as the black knight and pawn would be pinned, lest they expose their king to check, you cannot end a move with your king in check.

It took me longer than a minute, but I figured it out:

    Rf6

If black responds Pf6, then Bf6++
If black responds Ph6+, then Rh6++

  4. Rf6! Right. Gotta block that pawn from moving and force another move.

  5. waalaw says:

    1. R-f6
    If . . . . . . g7×f6
    2. B×f6#
    If . . . . . . h7-h6+ or h7-h5
    2. R×h6# or R-h6#
    If . . . . . . g7-g6
    2. R×f7#
