Novus Fumus, Nova Cola, Novus Vasus, Novus Ordo – UPDATED

Have you seen the riot of tweets about the changes that Cracker Barrel has made to their logo and decor?

This reminds me of “New Coke… Nova Cola“. A narrow group of experts and tasters work up a new formula. There is backlash. Coke starts making variants and rebrands. They bring Classic Coke back.

It reminds me of “Lucky Strike Goes To War!” The lie was that they were not going to print green packages because of the war effort when in truth they thought that more women would buy their cigarettes because the a neutral colored package would not clash with their clothing. So, they changed the package to appeal to women.  Novus Fumus.

When a group of bishops were shown the Novus Ordo of Mass in 1967, Cardinal Heenan of Westminster remarked to the Synod of Bishops (when it was still made up of bishops):

At home, it is not only women and children but also fathers of families and young men who come regularly to Mass. If we were to offer them the kind of ceremony we saw yesterday we would soon be left with a congregation of women and children.

Cracker Barrel… I haven’t been inside one of those for I don’t know how many decades.  There is one near where I live and I have been tempted to check it out.  To whom are they now trying to appeal?  I have a guess.

No longer.  Novus Vasus.

By the way, in classical Latin “novus” is generally a pejorative.

I have always thought the food at Cracker Barrel was…well…lousy. Just MY opinion, of course.

The first time I ate at one was just before Thanksgiving 1982. They did not serve real butter in illo tempore. At some point they began to serve real butter and thereby became better.
We used to eat at Cracker Barrel every Friday getting either fried fish or trout. Now for the detectives out there, they have a secret menu of things that used to be on the menu for the benefit of old time customers. It includes real hash browns and a plate of four vegetable sides. We ate at a Cracker Barrel last month for the first time in 4 years and it was still there. Maybe Butterpants (?) eats there.

Perhaps the new CEO was trained at the Vatican. Apparently most of the feedback has been positive, at least according to the company’s management.

I haven’t been to one in awhile but it had a unique decor. Now the rehab makes it look like every other eatery out there.

It seems to me the intention is to destroy a favorite restaurant of a certain demographic.

When you look at design today whether it’s the Synod graphics, a diocesan crest or a restaurant or apartment building there’s clearly an agenda to avoid beauty and deaden the soul.

I can walk into a dozen, ancient churches in Roman and never tire of the beauty. Walk into any modern building and instantly I’m depressed. I think that’s the goal. Uplifting one’s spirit might get you too close to God.

maternalView: I agree, and in fact one doesn’t even have to enter them, the external view is too often so visually boring. Everything in straight lines, few curves or arcuation to relieve the overwhelming linear emphasis. Even in an historical urban landscape with many old buildings around which are generally visually interesting, on various levels.

I used to work with architectural archives many years ago, and the standard of the drawing, with colour washes etc., was so impressive. Architects had to be able to draw! And do freehand lettering – no stencils. Many were quite good amateur, or not so amateur, artists as well. I think all that began to disappear sometime in the 60s/70s – and then C.A.D. came in during the 80s and… well…

O.k., that’s generalising a bit but many of the drawings I see these days (I get to see quite a few in looking at planning permission applications) are just awful. Very hard for even the informed layperson to interpret. They use a lot of photomontages to convey the impression. Which is fine, insofar as it goes. But the basic drawing skills seem to have disappeared.

I’ve eaten in one of those once, somewhere near Williamsport PA. Would not recommend. It’s not their logo or decor that needs improvement.
