Reactions on X to the Charlotte Pogrom and a last stab at the last Mass

I prepared this a couple days ago, but I didn’t post it.

With this new tweet, however, it’s time to hit “enter”.

It seems that the bishop forbade photos or video of the last TLM.

Yeah… you don’t want videos going around of people with tears streaming down their faces, do you.

From 30 Sept.

Some reactions to the Bishop of Charlotte’s letter to the faithful whose Masses he has suppressed.  In the letter he admits that the single distant chapel he designated for the TLM isn’t big enough as he reminds them to keep paying at their parishes if they go there.

I apologize in advance for repeated images. It’s the nature of Twitter/X.

I haven’t seen positive, supportive reactions to this pogrom.  Have you?

Finally… Just sayin’.

Why would people comply with such a vile order with such obvious ill intent behind it? I mean, what’s he gonna do if it gets recorded? Shut down the Latin Mass . . . oh, wait, too late. At this point I’m convinced the bishop could order everyone at a Latin Mass must wear tutus and people would grudgingly comply.

I think I have to stop reading Church news for a while. I’m as angry as I’ve been in a long, long time.

God bless the poor folks in Charlotte. I’m afraid most if not all of us will be in their same boat in the near future.

I attended that Mass last night and Yes, the sign was posted on the door. However, the Pastor did come to the front before Mass started and asked that no photos or video be taken of the Mass and instead to memorialize this last Mass in our hearts and minds. So it is not clear to me if the request came from the Pastor or the Bishop. If this came from the Pastor, then I respect the request – he has given so much to St Anns and the Latin Mass community. If this came from the Bishop, then it was most likely an attempt at damage control.

This seems best his excellency is able to do for the faithful at these parishes. In gratitude to his generosity I hope they will turn the Chapel of the Little Flower into a Basilica.

God bless them and keep them and if they need support let’s fund them.

Possible chance to push back against this, for those in Charlotte:

See part on right-hand side that says “New Initiative for Recourse against a Decree”. It looks as though Bishop Martin may, just, have overplayed his hand by selecting a chapel that can’t fit everybody. He may just be going against the letter of Traditiones Custodes.

I understand your anger, but we wont all be in the same boat.
Pope Leo has to deal with the SSPX new bishops conundrum sooner or later. Being a lowly retired electrician I’m clearly not a canon lawyer. I can’t see how he can deny them justice after all these years.
Francis lied through his teeth in Traditionis Custodes the whole world knows this. Archbishop Lefebvre was denied a hearing, I can’t see the laity putting up with that sort of behaviour now. Justice has to be seen to be done. Leo has to act within the law….. what worth is his Canon Law doctorate if he can’t even manage that.

  6. WVC says:

@Robbie the Pict – after Francis, one might ask “what worth is Canon Law”? He mangled it so much and so often that it’s almost a parody of itself.

It truly feels like the pope, the cardinals, and the bishops live so far ensconced in their own liberal circles that they are almost entirely severed from reality. Justice for Lefebvre? Those words don’t even compute in their world view. Heck, I’m not convinced they can understand an application of the word “justice” if it doesn’t mean supporting LGBTQ+ activists or unrestricted immigration. I suspect it will be a cold day on the Sun before you hear Pope Leo even suggest that Francis lied about anything – in these social circles maintaining the prestige of the party officials is far more important than things like “truth.”

Maybe this is why the Vatican has gotten so cozy with the CCP – they really do seem to be working off the same playbook.

My hope would be that the decent, orthodox cardinals and bishops of the world would gather together and consecrate new bishops for the SSPX. What if the Bishops of Africa got together, with Bishop Schneider and Bishop Strickland and Cardinals Burke, Sarah, and Mueller, and it was among this company that the new bishops were consecrated? To show that it was not just an “SSPX” thing anymore but a true crisis in the Church against which we all need to face together? I guess a guy can dream . . .

  7. Benedict Joseph says:

The dearth in vocations over the past sixty years has resulted in a dearth of men with the instinct, the heart and the brains, for authentic leadership. Narcissistic personality disorder can be mistaken for the capacity for leadership and it is becoming apparent that substitute is firmly in place. The result is catastrophic.

  8. JMody says:

I wonder how many Charlotte checkbooks might not intend to accommodate next year’s bishop’s appeal.
I wonder how many Mass-goers at the cathedral might not intend to accommodate the sermons anymore. I mean, admit it, after three whole readings AND a psalm, aren’t YOUR ears pretty full? Need a break before the canon and Communion? Just step out back, have a smoke, and get ready for the real core of Mass, after all.

  9. gothic serpent says:

    >This is the sort of action that will cause the SSPX and similar such groups to thrive.
Almost like Archbishop Lefebvre was right about everything?

  10. grayanderson says:

So, I’m wondering – in terms of church law, what would be the state of things if you regularly had an overflowing presence at the chapel in question and so ended up with people nominally “outside” (say, in tents) with temporary kneelers with an audio/video link to inside and coming inside for the Eucharist (as appropriate)?

In unrelated news, a friend of mine will be converting at his local FSSP parish (and his wife will be finishing her sacraments – she was baptized but her mother went irreligious afterwards and so she never had the rest of the sacraments). It is, in fact, the closest parish to his house (lucky guy – it’s within walking distance for him).

  11. Robbie the Pict says:

WVC…. all you say is true. We Remember the recent ordinations in the Diocese of Frejus – Toulon. I think it might have been one of Francis’s diktats that certain men were not to be ordained in that diocese. Some Cardinal or Bishop stood tall and carried out the ordinations “to his face”.
I’ve often thought that even in the most peaceful circumstances that several modern day ++ Antonio de Castro Mayer would assist as co – consecration when the SSPX eventually are graced with new Bishops.
In the event of consecration being carried out in less than peaceful times I’m certain that bishops will stand up and be counted like you said.

  12. Archlaic says:

    @grayanderson (et Alia)
My thought exactly: what if a majority of the Catholics from the four suppressed Masses proceeded to the little chapel at 1000 on the first Sunday… it would certainly draw some attention! If the authorities and the media got involved, the bishop would be in a tough spot: “I opened this chapel for them, and then I told them not to come, but they came anyway! So we need to close the chapel because of attendance issues!” Not quite Saint-Nicolas du Chardonnet but would be newsworthy! “We were asked to “be obedient to the Holy Father”… didn’t he say “HAGAN LÍO!”???

  13. Seamus says:

On the bright side, the Charlotte TLM community will be able to boast that all their Masses are standing-room-only.

  14. maternalView says:

I hope the TLM community in Charlotte becomes even more visible to the bishop.
