The rising sun illuminated the Borough of Brooklyn today at 6:35, which was 14 minutes earlier than how it had shed its light upon the Rione Regola in Rome.
It will for this Borough set at 16:43 and for the Rione at 16:48.
The Ave Maria Bell should ring at … well… the calendar says 17:30, but that could be wrong. The old chart I have – and old charts are to be trusted more than those who did the calendar, I think – says that from 4 -20 November the Ave Maria Bell should ring at 17:15.
At The Parish™ it should ring at about 17:18.
Kimchi. Breakfast of Champions. Oh yeah… a couple little breakfast sausagey things, not old cigar buts. I reserve them for special feast days.

Yesterday I teased you with the promise a recording of the Ave Maria Bell at The Parish™ and then I didn’t post it. My bad. I apologize to those of you from Columbia Heights who spent a half hour looking for it. Here it is (you may hear a seagull or two):
It is the Feast of the Four Holy Crowned Martyrs, the “Quatrro Coronati”, who died in 306 and St. Adeodatus, Pope, who died in 618. It is also the Feast of the Holy Relics, in particular the relics in St. Peter’s, hence, for Rome’s particular calendar, it is the Feast of All ROMAN Saints.
More on this in another post.

White to move and mate in 3. How long did it take you? Me: 5 seconds.

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.
So there!

For some thoughts of Fr Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange OP go HERE He thought it was theologically certain. Of course he is not the be all and end all of theology, but he knew more than his prayers!
Buy great beer and help the monks of Norcia.

My time: 4 seconds. :-)
But seriously, it is an easy one. Time about a minute to see the solution and another to convince myself I wasn’t missing something.
1) Qh8+ Kxh8 (forced)
2) Bf6+ Kg8 (forced)
3) Rxe8 mate
my pup Gubbio (named after the wolf of Gubbio so i would have an entree to low-key evangelization) would not like the fetch machine. don’t get me wrong, he loves fetch, but he thinks playing tug with the ball when he returns is also great fun.
Reginald is a good name.
Apparently the olden-days tradition was to call both Our Lady and Mother Church “Mater fidelium,” as one preferred. This makes sense, because there’s Father Abraham, Father Jacob, Father Adam, and so on, where each one is the father.
But yeah, apparently this bugs (or bugged before they died) certain theologians, and so the title “Mater fidelium” was deprecated for Our Lady, in favor of this newfangled “Mater populi fidelis.”
I suppose that it didn’t bug them enough to start calling Our Lady “Avia fidelium,” or anything weird like that.
But why not go further? Why not “Mater dilectorum Dei,” since St. Paul says that the Christians at Rome are “those beloved by God”? Or how about “Mater discipulorum dilectorum,” Mother of Beloved Disciples?
It’s all so wishy-washy.
Actually… it turns out that St. Anne does have the title of “Avia universalis” (Universal Grandmother) and “Avia omnium fidelium” (Grandmother of all the Faithful).
This follows from St. Bonaventure saying that Mary was not only “the Mother of Christ in particular” but also the mother of all the faithful universally. So she’s “Mater universalis” too.
