The remarks on perfection by Newman are, it seems to me, really important. It reminds me of the father who said that he clothes the naked and feeds the hungry all the time, meaning he takes care of his family, especially by providing for the basic needs of his children (who otherwise would be naked and hungry). I believe our Church hierarchy would do more good by emphasizing our very local duties rather than making pious statements about what we can do for the unknown poor thousands of miles away. The way the Church has dealt with this in the past was creating saints at home who would then be inspired to renounce the world and serve the needy (those who don’t know Christ) far from home.
