Your Holy Day Sermon Notes – Octave of Christmas (VO Circumcision) – Mary, Mother of God (NO)

Too many people today are without good, strong preaching, to the detriment of all. Share the good stuff.

Was there a GOOD point made in the sermon you heard at your Mass of obligation for this Octave of Christmas, Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (in the Novus Ordo)?

Tell us about attendance especially for the Traditional Latin Mass.

Any local changes or (hopefully good) news?

Novus Ordo. Father spoke on the Council of Ephesus, 431 AD, which declared Mary as Theotokos (God Bearer) or Mother of God.

He then went on to mention that Jesus had the DNA of Mary and probably had a s face similar to hers. He recommended we have a crucifix in every room or a picture of Jesus’ face to gaze upon.

Some points made in our sermon for the Feast of the Circumcision / Octave of Christmas:
The birth of Christ was the most important event in human history, such that our calendar is based around that event, even though in modern times they try to hide this by terms such as the Common Era.
This was the ultimate act of humility, God becoming a helpless baby. He did it because he loves us so much. God so loved the world that he sent is only Son etc.

The choir sang what is probably my most favorite mass setting, the Missa Magnum Mysterium by Tomas Luis de Victoria. It was so beautiful.

My parish is Novus Ordo, with a significant Hispanic community. The Vigil Mass was en espanol, and the morning Mass was in English. We predictably had a very good-sized crowd, as we should, and I think the Spanish Mass was also well-attended in spite of the vicious cold and the snowstorm going on here in NE Ohio.

Our retired vicar, who has a great devotion to Our Lady, spoke on the motherhood of Mary. Even though she was highly favored by God, she did not have an easy life. She lived every day of her life in poverty. She worked hard simply to survive and to make a pleasant home for Joseph and Jesus. And she no doubt suffered from the gossip of others about being with child before she lived with Joseph, which prepared her for the incredible suffering she endured on Good Friday. Father told us Mary is not only the ideal example to all women, but to men as well, along with St. Joseph. They both trusted God through thick and thin, and they were happy to suffer well for His sake.

I thought it was a splendid homily. Father led us in a Hail Mary after the final blessing, and he and the altar servers also paused during the recessional before leaving the altar to bow before the statue of Our Lady of the Assumption at one of our side altars.

Father’s Homily for Feast of the Circumcision – he leaned on the words of St Anthony of Padua, who referenced the preaching of Pope Innocent III.
The cutting away of what is superfluous in a concise way.
Our lifetime is a 7 Day span. To be rewarded on the 8th Day. The Last Day of the World. Our Resurrection. All evil is circumcised.
    Prepare for the 8th Day.
