Thusly I heft a scriptural lantern to illuminate the special content of our Epistle reading for this 14th Sunday after Pentecost from Galatians 5:16-24. Herein we have Paul’s list of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. In the Revised Standard Version (RSV), Paul signals nine. In the Latin Vulgate and Douay-Rheims Version (DRV) we find twelve.

An excellent Dominican homily at their church today in Houston, focusing on what it takes to receive Holy Communion fruitfully: basically, perseverance in the face of our own fallen state, in other words, repentance after one’s sin, and then repentance gain after the next sin, never losing hope or despairing.
Dominica XIV post Pentecostem. When we go to hospital for an operation, we know we will be in pain afterwards. But we trust the doctor and expect to recover. However we don’t seem to have the same trust in God. Except for sin, in which God allows Man free will, God is in control of everything else in our lives. So if we go through suffering, there is a purpose to it and God allows it for that purpose.
We were at the 8:30 AM Low Mass and the church was packed as it always is.
I talked about the Gospel and its exhortation to commitment to our Lord. Our choices have consequences. I quoted a Bob Dylan song, “Serve Somebody.” Our choice is to serve Christ or the devil. Who/ what do we choose?
