There is something about Borromini’s beautiful lantern on Sant’Ivo, which reminds one a bit of a washing machine agitator. I’ve been reminded rather a lot about agitators these days, and not the sort who protest at speeches of conservatives. Also, not in the way in way that Saint Mary Maytag does in San Francisco, or the cathedral in Liverpool. Come to think of it, the latter looks more like the Mercury capsule or the marooned Starliner.

In chessy news, I read today about the events surrounding the 2024 Chess Olympiad to be held in Budapest. Why didn’t arrange things differently so that I could take in Budapest before heading to Rome? The Olympics will be held from 10-23 September. Also, it is the 100th anniversary of FIDE. Lot’s of things going on for that. Richard Rapport will again play for Hungary. He’s Magyar, but played for Romania for a while. Peter Leko, a great commentator, returns to the board. For these USA we have Fabi, Wesley, Leinier, Levon and Ray Robson. A good line up. It would have been great to have Hikaru, but all are 2700 and above. They will give the Indians and Chinese a run. Now that I’ve read this I have a yen for Paprikas Csirke. But, of course, it’s Friday.
Black to move and win material. Careful!

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.

I should have solid washer/dryer news tomorrow.
Meanwhile, in honor of starting to watch Endeavour again, for a penitential Friday lunch…

Your penitential lunch seems more like a cry for help, Father.
You have no idea.
However, I have since sought the help of a dustbin.
I’ve had Branston and cheese sandwiches before. It was less than … good. It was either my mood, or the combination of that pickle, that cheese, that bread….
That’ll teach me to eat.
I could only manage a slither of the Branston myself, last I had it. Adding a “generous spoonful” to a sandwich reminds me of the novice mistake many make with vegemite, where less is more (especially when mixed up with butter).
Which reminds me. Cheese & vegemite is actually surprisingly good.
With just a savory tweak or two, you have my own penitential meal, which does cross over into edibility: grilled cheese on buttered sourdough, with a good dose of chopped jalapenos, made brown and yummy in a cast iron skillet. Certainly less than wonderful , but it does beat a kick in the head.
I don’t think Montana has Branstons.? I’m certain that I never have.
More than a spoonful. It needed just a smear. That was the problem, I think. Just a little for the contrast. Will I try it again? In the past when I have had it, I probably used just a little and there was more of a different kind of cheese.
Breakfast tomorrow, Patum Peperium?
Dear Fr. Z.
Ah, Patum Peperium !!! The Gentleman’s relish.
Cannot be bettered.
Ausgezeichnet !!!
I highly recommend this recipe for English Pickle. It keeps great too in fridge after you make it.

Liverpool’s Cathedral is (un)affectionately known by English Catholics as Paddy’s Wigwam. Definitely not PC at all, but the name has stuck. On a purely architectural basis (and not metaphysical or humanitarian) one of those random church fires that happen a lot in France wouldn’t be a bad thing there.
St. Mary Maytag isn’t such a bad name for it, since in addition to the agitator it also features a spray jet soaker system.
