Rome 24/10 – Day 2: Lights (video)

The sun rose over Rome at 7:06 and it is going to set soon at 18:52.

The Ave Maria today changed to the 1900 cycle.   It is the Feast of the Guardian Angels, to whom we owe so much joyful gratitude and… attention.

Angele Dei, qui custos es mei,
me tibi commissum pietate superna
(hodie, hac nocte)
illumina, custodi, rege, et guberna!

Amen.

Thank you, Lord, for this day.

A taste of last night’s edge of golden light towards the aforementioned sunset.

Notice the “mascherone” and the kids with the soccer ball.  Rome.

What greeted me this morning.  Click for larger.

I have my eye on a new place and I won’t have this view.   But I’ll get over it.

This isn’t the Feast of St. Raphael, but Raphael certainly was Tobit’s Guardian Angel!   This is one of the beautifully restored paintings at The Parish.

Breakfast with The World’s Best Sacristan™.

Last night we were bringing some things over to my place from storage and I saw that many of the lamps were blinking.  “What gives?”  Remember a couple weeks back I posted some video of a bad storm at Rome?  It seems that that storm screwed up whatever regulates the consistency of current (capacitors?) to these lights.

In the church across the way, dedicated to St. Jerome, St Philip Neri started his Oratory.  Here is a little inscription for those who are so inclined.  I know at least one of you are, because you asked for it.   There is interesting information in here for the history of the Roman Church.

In churchy news… I recommend a piece by my friend Robert Royal at The Catholic Thing about the empty rehashing of 70’s cliches in this round of “walking together about walking togetherity”.

Also, the Holy See is bleeding red ink. My spies say that the hunt is one for buildings etc. to sell in Rome to plug the hole. Gosh. I wonder what would happen if their “messaging” changed? But who am I to judge.

  1. In chessy news…

Magnus “GOAT” Carlsen beat Alireza “Puer” Firouzja to win the Julius Baer Generation Cup. Wesley So won in Division II, defeating Denis Lazavik in an Armageddon tiebreaker. Wesley is strong right now, which is great to see. He had lost a heartbreaker to Ivanchuck in the Olympics, but has really popped back. Fabiano Caruana won Division III decisively beating the talented young German Vincent Keymer. Carlsen, MVL, Nepomniachtchi, Wesley So, Denis Lazavik, Vincent Keymer, Levon Aronian and Puer have all qualified for the in-person final event in Oslo this December.

White to move and mate in 2.

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.

There was a great interview with Wesley after his victory HERE (I set it at the right time marker) Such a nice fellow. And as always gives thank to the Savior for his successes. NB: CAT ALERT!

  2. Thanks for the beautiful picture of St Raphael, my oblate namesake and patron! Maybe someday I will be able to venerate it at The Parish in person! In the meantime, thanks for taking us all with you on your Roman pilgrimage. I enjoy each day’s posting tremendously!

  3. TheCavalierHatherly says:

“It seems that that storm screwed up whatever regulates the consistency of current (capacitors?) to these lights.”

Correct! The capacitors usually go, and so you get bunny hopping voltages instead of steady ones. Most of these new LED lights are made as cheaply as possible, unfortunately.

    Sell off buildings ?
How about starting with the Paul VI Audience Hall ?

  6. EAW says:

    @monstrance:
Or selling off Casa Santa Marta to a hotel chain? ;)

  7. A read who studied with Fr. Foster years ago took a stab at the long inscription. These inscriptions can be informative!

Here is his attempt. I may add a comment.

“This most distinguished temple (church), once of the Roman Matron Saint Paula,
the domicile of Saint Jerome the greatest [very great] Doctor of the Church,
the long time lodging and inn of Saint Philip Neri
together with the greatest [main] altar having been erected unto the honor of the same Doctor (under which in addition to the Saints Primitivus and Vitalis) the remains of him having been encased by means of the tablet/board [slab]
similarly the bodies of more than another 200 martyrs rest here.
The most enlightened [illustrious] and the most reverend D. (distinctio/dominus?) [Dominus – Lord] Charles Albert Guidobonus of the Cavalchinus family, Archbishop of Philippi, by means of a solemn rite/ceremony consecrated (with the object at the beginning in lines one, two and three “and the verb wayyyy down the line” as Reggie used to say) on the third day after Kalends (October 2), 1738.
In fact, [However] he prescribed the yearly/anniversary feast of this consecration to be celebrated unto posterity.
He bestowed (that) on the 3rd Sunday of any September month without distinction
on which day to the faithful ones of Christ devoutly visiting it
in addition to more than a daily plenary indulgence and very many other indulgences having been bestowed by the beneficence of the most high Pontifixes (the Popes) [Pontiffs]
another about to last without interruption 40 days in the [sustomary] form having been accustomed of the Church.
The Archconfraternity of Charity, lest the memory of the matter be extinguished, took the care that the monument be placed.”

I think that bit above is is more like…

by means of a solemn rite/ceremony consecrated on the third day after Kalends (October 2), 1738
but he prescribed the yearly feast of this consecration to be celebrated unto posterity
on the 3rd Sunday of any September month without distinction
on which day to Christ’s faithful devoutly visiting it (the templum),
in addition to more than a daily plenary indulgence and very many other indulgences having been bestowed by the beneficence of the Supreme Pontiffs,
he conceded another in the Church’s customary form to last for 40 days without interruption.
