Chessy news… Magnus won the Rapid and Blitz in Croatia.  Big news.  Happily Wesley So took silver.  YAY!   Look at this CRAZY game between Wesley and Fabiano Caruana.   If you are pressed for time, skip down to about move 40 and WATCH the chaos.

    Summorum Pontificum Day!
The memories are still vivid… up at 0400 to check for news… nothing, but couldn’t go back to sleep… exchanged a few emails with friends (also up early by some strange coincidence!)… checked with a few folks in Europe (one had confirmation that it had indeed been released to the media under embargo)… 0700 “mom, why has dad barricaded himself in the dining room with his computer and phone?” and then a moment later: “now he’s yelling ‘Hallelujah’ and doing some sort of a jig!”… the rest of the day a blur of local and international calls, a couple of media interviews… around noon it was proposed that I host a gathering that evening and indeed it came to pass… Possibly the single most joyous event I have ever attended, even before the champagne (nearly every guest brought a bottle) started to flow! Pure, unalloyed, childlike happiness!
Of course we thought that was the end of the struggle… but even on that dark day when Franciscus Caesar inflicted the cruel, crude, and vicious Trad. Perditores upon the Church I managed to endure it in no small part thanks to the evergreen memory of that happy day – 7-7-07 – and the courageous and farsighted act of a great pope of blessed memory!

  2. I recall the day like it was yesterday, though now almost 2 decades…entombed in a SCIF at Lockheed Martin, on the corporate network pointed at our host’s website, hitting ‘refresh’ from time to time to see if the news broke…and the feeling of relief when it did.

I could not help thinking, when PF released TC, which didn’t even attempt to hide its disdain for what SP released behind platitudes and survey results (not to mention previous comments characterizing the more traditional members of the faith), how it must have broken the heart of +Benedict (may his memory be eternal), that wise, gentle theologian and perhaps someday Doctor of the Church, whose understanding of what needed be done and why was leagues deeper than his successor. To me, it seemed the triumph of expediency over generosity and intolerance while hypocritically preaching diversity and ‘going to the margins’.

Not holding my breath regarding any change in the near term. I’d love to be proven wrong. But not holding my breath, in any case.
