My 26 third graders are very excited for their First Eucharist tomorrow! We have been practicing and preparing all year and the day has almost arrived… please pray for them (and especially their parents, most of whom do not come to Mass with any regularity).
One of the nicest guys and gentlest souls I’ve ever met is being ordained priest this morning. He also writes a blog called An Ambassador for Christ. May his ministry flourish!

I very recently got engaged! We met on Holy Thursday after Mass last year, in the temporary Chapel to watch with Christ. A year later, on that same calendar day, which fell on Easter Friday this year, the year liturgical anniversary of our first date, we got engaged! Wahoo!
My In-Laws are moving out tomorrow and to Alaska in a few short weeks!!!!!

Watching TLM on EWTN with Fr Z commentating! Yeh!
Our MEF at Holy Angels Church in Mount Airy, NC, now takes place almost every Sunday at 12noon. Holy Angels had begun this new schedule back in March. It’s in a chapel, the old church, which has been redone especially for the MEF, with a altar facing east and altar rails. So far between 40 to 60 souls have been present. And high noon makes it easier for folks who come from a distance.
The future schedule: no Mass in the Extraordinary Form on 16 May, 30 May, and 06 Jun. Otherwise 12noon Sundays.
Plans are underway at my church for two major events in May: 1) a Solemn High Mass (TLM) for the Sunday after Ascension. A compensated choir/schola will chant the appointed introit, gradual and alleluia verses and communion verse, and will sing the Kyrie, Sanctus/Benedictus and Agnus Dei from Hassler’s “Missa Secunda”. For the offertory I’m hoping we’ll be able to pull off the Byrd motet “Ascendit Deus in jubilationem”. The people will chant the Gloria (De Angelis) and also the Creed.
The next weekend, we’ll be celebrating a Solemn Choral Vespers with Benediction for the Feast of Pentecost, using a combination of old rite and current LOTH. The introductory chant (Deus in adjutorium) and two of the psalms (Dixit Dominus and In exitu) will be sung to Latin chant psalm tones with their proper antiphons; the verses of the In exitu will be alternated between chant and a falsobordone by Vittoria. The “Revelation Canticle” will be sung in English to an Anglican double-chant with the antiphon also in English, set to the melody of the Gregorian proper. The Magnificat will be the Stanford setting in C with the proper antiphon also in English. The hymn “Veni Creator” will be sung with the first verse in Latin and the remaining verses in English.
This is all very exciting, and a lot of work lay ahead. But, as Cadfael once said, “Harder things are done by the saints daily!”
Our new set of six altar candlesticks arrived this week and we used them for the first time at our Missa cantata for the Feast of St. George yesterday. They’re beautiful!
I was blessed to continue my graduate studies as a seminarian of my Archdiocese. Got my letter from the Archbishop on Holy Saturday. Deo gratias!
Good news?
Yeah – I was home to hear that most profound homily by Bishop Edward Slattery at the Pontifical High Mass in honor of Pope Benedict XVI.
I’m 3 weeks smoke free! That’s my good news.
Here in Edinburgh, Scotland, we had a Solemn High Mass to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the inauguration of the Pontificate of our beloved Pope Benedict XVI which included the wonderful hymn “God Bless our Pope” – sung with gusto by all who attended. One of our diocesan priests, who has just attended the LMS training week at Ushaw the week previously, acted as Sub-Deacon for the very first time. This was the first time a Solemn High Mass has been celebrated in the church (the last pre-reformation church to be built in Scotland) for 400 years.
Love live the Pope!
My good news today was watching the Pontifical Mass in the Extraordinary Form with FrZ as a WONDERFUL master of ceremonies.
That’s my good news too-watching the High Mass from Washington and hearing Father Z’s commentaries! My computer was acting up a bit at the library, but I got to see a great majority of it.
There’d better be some photos for us to see, Father Z!

Speaking of Edinburgh, Scotland (but not about Catholic Liturgy) I learned the other night that my oldest son will be performing there on his bagpipes this summer – at the 75th Military Tattoo. He will be with The Citadel Regimental Band & Pipes. Joshua saw them Tattoo when he was there for bagpipe band competition back in 1998, with the St. Thomas Episcopla Pipe Band who won the World Juvenile Championship that summer. Now, not only will he be performing there, but St. Thomas will have the band in Scotland again this summer for competition. They will get to see one of their own performing. And I’m pretty sure Joshua is the piper from that ’98 band still performing and in competition on the bagpipes.
Now, all I need are prayers that I can figure out a way to get there myself!
Blessed Mother took charge of her own Cathedral today and expelled the demons, at least for a time. The Pontifical Solemn Mass in honor of Pope Benedict’s 5th anniversary came off without a hitch with Bishop Slattery doing an impressive job as celebrant. The children’s choir was simply awesome but the adult choir was also in good voice. No communion in the hand, no funny business, just reverence and piety on the part of all concerned. An altar, a communion rail, everyone facing the same way. melodious sounds, priests properly vested, and clergy who looked the part of those dedicated to their sacred ministry. Even Fr. Z was commentating. What more could anyone ask for?
God bless Bishop Slattery. What a beautiful celebration of the Mass. I had tears in my eyes at the Consecration (but that’s actually normal for me)-to see a REAL Bishop saying the black, doing the red, with all reverence. And yes, Father Z and Father Goodwin – Hurrah!
My diocese will be ordaining six of my friends (four in June and two in October) to the priesthood (3) and transitional diaconate (3)!
My wife and I are very much looking forward to leaving on Wednesday with the annual pilgrimage of the Order of Malta to Lourdes, joining thousands of members of the Order and our guest malades from around the world.
Son just returned from a seminary live in weekend and is discerning more towards a religious vocation….Another son agreed to learn enough organ pieces to sub at the church in a few weeks. …Both of these sons will be singing a Memorial Requiem Mass in 2 weeks…We had 2 priests over for dinner last Monday and the conversation was lovely and their presence awesome for the kids (they love having priests over for dinner)and me too. Another son is graduating as an engineer next weekend and has a job lined up already…and finally spent most of the day at church sewing with young girls for the poor in Mexico..they were fun to work with as well as with their moms. God has been good to us!!!
It’s a gorgeous day. My family is all well. My friend’s son had his First Holy Communion today. It’s all good. Thanks be to God!

We have all taken such a beaten of late with these attacks on Pope Benedict, I am so happy my American friends have something to feel joy over with the celebration of the Pontifical Mass by Bishop Slattery, and the fact that through EWTN, this was seen by a vastly larger audience. Glad that blognic went so well too!

Ended a successful retreat Tuesday evening.
Turned in my application for the seminary yesterday.
Played the “organ” and sang at the first Mass in our parish’s newly built St. Peregrine Shrine today. The shrine has a blog The Mass was in Latin (Novus Ordo), and I estimated over 80 attendees (the chapel is only built to seat 70)! The Latin Mass will be said every Saturday at 8am from now on.

Spent the day with my son and our parish Youth Group at the FSSP’S Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in Denton, NE. The kids participated in several rousing rounds of Catholic Quiz Bowl. After the game we prayed the rosary and Vespers in the beautiful new chapel. We also stayed for dinner. I was very impressed with the seminarians. They are fine young men and really made us feel welcome.
Today I was among the corps of servers for the Pontifical Mass at the National Shrine. My good news will be published at my blog tomorrow night.
our second season rice harvest was good. We were worried that we’d lose it to insects, but it was okay.
Last years, some local farmers here in Luzon lost the main season to the hurricane related flooding, so this is a blessing for local farmers.
And pray that the up coming election doesn’t result in deaths. The local bishop had most of the politicians sign a “no violence” pledge…
Three great blessings for which our family is very thankful: Our youngest two children are recovering well from pneumonia. Our oldest son is getting married to a lovely, Catholic in August. And our second-oldest son is in the enviable position of deciding which university he would most like to attend because his three top choices (University of Dallas, Catholic University, and Notre Dame) all accepted him.
Our son-in-law passed his oral exam for his doctorate at CUA “with distinction.” He has the teaching job he really wanted in Philadelphia, so their first child our daughter is expecting will be fairly near to us and to some cousins. That daughter and a son were able to attend the Pontifical Mass and later the son (Boko…) met Fr. Z at the blognic, an experience we enjoyed vicariously through phone calls from The Dubliner. At the same time my husband and I were attending an excellent day-long Marian symposium with outstanding presenters, Dr. Edward Sri and Sr. Sheila Galligan.

I was privileged to attend the Papal Mass at the Shrine yesterday and was overwhelmed by the crowd in attendance. My daughter, who has been away from the Church for years went with me and didn’t utter a single complaint the whole day. This morning I went to Mass at Old St. Mary’s. Two EFs in two days! I am blessed!

3. Learned recently that 30 young men in the Grand Rapids, MI area are considering the seminary. A different family each week in one of the Parishes prays specifically for vocations. TBTG.
4. The Diocese of Kalamazoo has 13 seminarians, 3 more coming in, and 2 considering.
5. “Bad Stuff” is easier when you get to read/write about it in a forum where others have an understanding. Much better than hearing/reading about it in isolation.

Answered Prayer! We easily found my daughter’s missing, eansy-weensy, itsy-bity hearing aid piece. Which costs at least $200, and which medicaid was NOT going to replace. Deo Gratias!
It could have been anywhere in the house–but it was in the first sofa cranny I searched. The very first place.
My first grandchild was born yesterday! Owen William entered into this world April 25 at 8 lb., 4 oz., on the feast of St. Mark…thanks be to God. My daughter had had two miscarriages, so this was indeed a miracle. May the holy angels guard him and protect him in this new journey!
Turned up at Mass yesterday to discover the Benedictine arrangement on the altar. 6 decent-sized candles on each side of a beautiful cross (the cross has been there for some months now). And this in a church where not that long ago no cross and the 2-to-one-side thing was de rigeur! And also with no change in the parish staff so the Spirit is definitely moving. Deo gratias.
Went to a wonderful Latin Mass conference in Enfield, CT on Saturday. My friend and I had a vending table and we ended up doing pretty well.
I’m accepted into 3 great Catholic colleges and now have to make a final decision.
